Until recently, the development of computing is to maximize CPUs’ clock frequency in order to squeeze out
more operations per second. But in mid-2000s, this approach hit the power wall. Since CPUs become more
powerful than ever, the consumption of energy increases tremendously and the heat production also raises
rapidly. With the widespread use of mobile devices, the consumption of energy turns out to be an essential
issue. Besides, there are plenty large-scale applications require computational resources that have far
exceeded the resources that can be provided. Therefore, we have to find a promising solution to overcome
the problem, and here comes Approximate Computing – trade-off between accuracy and efficiency to
acquire a reasonable performance. Approximate Computing makes computations closer to human-like
computational computations. For instance, when people being asked to do complex arithmetic and they do
not have calculators in hand, they usually will give an approximate answer rather than an exact answer.
This is the way our brains try to save ourselves energy, and we can learn from it to implement some
Approximate Computing strategies.
This is a reminder that the deadline for project submissions is 12 noon on 18. August 2017. (except for
students who were granted an extension).
http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/teaching/courses/diss/guide.html#Submission You should have received your
submission pack from the ITO.
Some points worth noting:
The submission of the electronic version of your thesis is done via the submission webpage (see
http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/teaching/courses/diss/guide.html#Submission) and not with the “submit” command.
Project demos are not required.
We recommend that you read the guidelines for bibliography entries in
www.inf.ed.ac.uk/teaching/courses/proj/bibliography.html – it’s easy to get this right, and failure to do so is a
sign of sloppiness that the reader may suspect extends to other aspects of your work.
You are not required to use the title of the project proposal as your report title. In particular, if the topic of
your project shifted from the originally-specified topic, then please use a title that indicates your actual topic.
When submitting electronically, you are required to submit a “project materials directory archive” that
contains your code and other supporting evidence for the project examiners, and to provide the location of a
pdf file containing your project report. There is an upper limit of 4GB for the archive file.
